Warfare soldiers in ancient Greece were almost always battling on foot and needed to be fully protected in order to survive the battle.

Only well-off citizens could afford the armor so soldiers were of necessity a social elite. The bronze helmet protected their heads and also gave them a fierce look that scared their opponents from miles distance.
